What No One Told You About Taking Care of Your Vagina.

Did you get a short and awkward “sex talk” from your parents that left you with more questions than answers?

Did a school nurse try to tell you about “your changing body,” but you spent the whole time trying not to laugh?

No fear my dears. I’m here to fill in the blanks and give you the rundown on your downtown.

  1. Cotton Underwear.

    1. 100% cotton 100% of the time. Spandex, lace, silk, and everything else just traps moisture up against your skin . . . which means hello yeast infection.

  2. Sleep with NOTHING on, or only light loose breathable pajama pants or shorts. Let it breathe my dear, let it breathe.

  3. No Soap in the vaginal area.

    1. I REPEAT: NO SOAP IN THE VAGINAL AREA.

    2. This is where I lose people. Your vagina is not “dirty,” so you don’t need to “clean” it. You have lots of good bacteria that keep your vagina at a healthy pH balance. So if you are using lots of soap, baby wipes, douching products, Summer’s Eve, etc., you are washing away all the good bacteria! That good bacteria was supposed to protect you against yeast and bacterial infections. Let it do its thing.

    3. Anything that suds up very well is going to draw moisture from your skin and potentially cause dryness. So this can make your vulva itchy. . . which no one enjoys.

    4. Your vagina is a self cleaning oven. . . weird analogy, I know. But it’s true. Your vagina is smart and knows how to take care of itself. Let her do her thang.

  4.  Evaluate your menstrual products.

    1. Tampons, pads, and pantyliners, oh my!

    2. Your products should have a long list of things that ARE NOT included: chlorine free, fragrance free, bleach free, etc. Look for 100% Organic cotton and you’re on the right track.

    3. ANYTHING that says “Odor Control” contains chemicals that should be nowhere near your vagina. Also, RUDE. You do not have an “odor,” . . . you are menstruating!

  5. If you are wicked sensitive, look at eliminating fragrance from your life pretty much everywhere.

    1. To include: soap, fabric softener, dryer sheets, shampoo, conditioner, soap/shower gel, etc.

Those are the highlights and should keep you pretty happy and healthy in general. Stay tuned for more nitty gritty details. And don’t forget to email if you have more questions and would like me to deep dive on more topics! Cheers!
